Codex pricing
Codex comes with Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. The allowance is shared and moves with the model. The live usage page beats any reprinted range.
Codex cost is mostly your ChatGPT plan
Codex pricing, Codex usage, and Codex cost are one question: how much coding-agent work your plan includes. OpenAI's Codex pricing page says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Plus remains $20 a month on the Plus help article. The Codex materials also refer to Pro at $100 and $200, and Business seats at $20 and $100. Confirm those on chatgpt.com/pricing before you buy, because plan packaging changes.
Local messages and cloud tasks share one allowance. A five-hour window and a weekly window can both apply. A long task on a larger model spends more than a short edit. If you are near a limit, the pricing page suggests a lower-cost model so the allowance lasts longer.
Estimates, credits, and where to look
OpenAI's usage article for GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex publishes estimated ranges, not a guaranteed message count. On that table, Plus is about 5 to 45 for GPT-6 Astra, 10 to 100 for GPT-5.6 Sol, and 25 to 200 for GPT-5.6 Terra, in the window the article defines. Pro 5x and Pro 20x are higher columns on the same table. Those ranges were the published estimates when this page was checked. Your Settings, Usage panel is the number that actually applies.
Since April 2026, OpenAI's Codex rate card says usage is priced from tokens: input, cached input, and output, rather than a flat price per message. Credits let you continue after the included allowance. The rate card says a typical developer might land around $100 to $200 a month, with a wide spread. That is their average comment, not a quote for your repo. In the CLI, /status shows remaining limits for the session.
Questions
- Is Codex free?
- It is included on the free ChatGPT plan, with a smaller allowance than Plus or Pro. Past the allowance, you wait for a reset, upgrade, or buy credits if your account offers them.
- Do ChatGPT Work and Codex share a limit?
- OpenAI's help pages say Work and Codex share the allowance and credit pool when both are available on the account. A heavy Work day can leave less Codex, and the reverse.
- What is a Codex goal?
- A way to point Codex at an outcome and let it keep working. The goal page covers that use, separate from the price.
