ChatGPT Manual

Analyze pictures

Ask one question about a picture you may upload. ChatGPT can describe and read. It cannot identify a stranger or diagnose from a photo.

Description is not identification

Analyze pictures is a search for an image description. ChatGPT can talk about what is visible: objects, layout, rough text. An image analyzer GPT is a custom chat aimed at that. Neither one should be used to name a person from a face, guess ancestry, or score attractiveness. Those pages explain why: face analysis, ethnic guesser, attractiveness.

For a translation of text inside the photo, ask it to transcribe first and translate second. Then compare the transcription with the picture. The translate hub covers the language step.

How to do it

  1. Confirm you can share the file. Your photo, a chart you made, or a screenshot you are allowed to process. Not a private document that belongs to someone else.
  2. Ask one question. What is the total in the right column? What language is the sign? Describe the layout. A vague 'analyze this' returns a generic caption.
  3. Check the reading. Numbers and names are the parts to compare with the image. If it disagrees with the pixels, trust the pixels.

Questions

Can it read a receipt or a whiteboard?
Often, yes. Verify totals and any word that changes the meaning. Glare and handwriting raise the error rate.
Can it tell me who is in the photo?
Do not use it that way. Naming private people from images is not a feature this guide will help you run.
Is the image stored?
That depends on your ChatGPT settings and plan. Read OpenAI's privacy FAQ in your account before you upload a sensitive file.
