ChatGPT Manual

Ethnic guesser

A face is not an ethnicity test. Tools that label ancestry from a photo are unreliable and easy to misuse. This page does not run one.

What people think the tool does

Ethnic guesser searches look for a box where you upload a face and receive a nationality or an ancestry label. A custom GPT on ChatGPT has been aimed at that. The label is a stereotype with a percentage attached. Ethnicity and race are not readable off a snapshot. People who share a nationality do not share one face. People who look similar are not one group.

This manual will not give you the prompt, the upload steps, or a link you should use on another person. Guessing a stranger's background from a photo is how bias gets a user interface.

Questions a photo can answer

Lighting, focus, and whether text in the frame is legible: those are picture analysis. Medical identity and ancestry are not. If you need your own family history, use records and relatives, not a portrait model.

OpenAI's usage policies limit harmful uses of the model. A custom GPT does not opt out of those policies by having a catchy name.

Questions

Can ChatGPT tell ethnicity from a photo?
It can emit a label. The label is not evidence. Do not use it for hiring, policing, dating, or a joke about a real person.
What about my own photo?
A model still cannot see your grandparents. If you are curious about ancestry, that is a family and records question, not an image prompt.
Why mention the GPT at all?
Because the search expects it. The honest answer is that the task is the wrong task, including when a custom GPT offers it.
