ChatGPT Manual

ChatGPT cover letter

A cover letter from ChatGPT should use the job post and your resume, not a generic paragraph about being a team player.

Inputs that make the letter specific

ChatGPT cover letter searches want a page you can send. Give it three things: the role title, four requirements copied from the posting, and two stories from your resume that match. Ask for 250 to 350 words, first person, no line about passion for the industry.

OpenAI's learn page for cover letters is the official writing guide. This page is the checklist around it. If the draft mentions a skill that is not in your notes, delete the sentence.

The paragraph worth keeping

One concrete story beats five claims. Ask for a middle paragraph that names the situation, what you did, and what changed, using only your facts. The opening can be two sentences: the role, and the closest match from your history.

Read it aloud. If you would not say a sentence to the hiring manager, it does not go in. Then match names: company, product, and the spelling of the role, copied from the posting rather than from memory.

Questions

How long should the letter be?
Ask for under 350 words unless the posting asks for something else. Long letters repeat the resume.
Can I use the same letter for every job?
Only the skeleton. The middle story and the requirements you echo have to change with the posting, or the letter reads as a template.
What if I have a gap in work?
Say what you want said, in your own words, and ask ChatGPT to keep that explanation and not fill the gap with a fictional project.
