ChatGPT Manual

ChatGPT for writing

ChatGPT for writing is a drafting tool. Give it the point, the reader, and the facts. You still check every claim before it leaves your hands.

Start with the job, not a vibe

ChatGPT for writing ranks as a search because people want a finished paragraph from a rough note. The useful version is narrower: a first draft in a form you name. Email, school explanation, product blurb, and story scene are different jobs. Say which one.

OpenAI's writing page is the product surface for this. This manual does not generate the text for you. Paste your notes into ChatGPT. A prompt that works: Reader, length, purpose, facts I must include, words I do not want. Then: draft only. Do not invent numbers, quotes, or sources.

What you edit after the draft

Read for added facts first. Models fill gaps with plausible detail: a statistic, a law, a 'study'. Delete anything you did not supply and cannot point to. Then read tone. The default voice is tidy and a bit generic. Mark three sentences that do not sound like you and ask for those three only to be rewritten, with your own phrase as the model.

School and work rules still apply. If the assignment says the writing must be yours, follow that rule. Using a chat to understand a reading is different from submitting the chat's essay. When a text needs a record, keep your notes and the version you actually stand behind.

  • One reader. 'Everyone' produces a brochure.
  • A length cap. 'Short' becomes five hundred words.
  • Your facts in a list, above the ask.
  • A ban on new numbers and fake citations.

Questions

Is ChatGPT allowed for school writing?
That is your school's rule, not OpenAI's. Many courses allow brainstorming and ban submitting generated prose as your own. Read the syllabus before you paste an assignment.
Why does the draft sound the same every time?
The prompt did not include your phrases or a real reader. Paste one paragraph you like and say to match that rhythm, not to copy it.
Can it cite sources for me?
Only if you provide them or you check each one. A confident citation can be wrong. Open the source. If you cannot, cut the citation.
