ChatGPT Canvas
Canvas is the old side panel for writing and code. On current GPT-5.5 models, OpenAI moved that work into blocks in the chat. Canva is a different app.
Canvas, the feature
ChatGPT Canvas is the search for the split view that held a document or code beside the chat. OpenAI's release notes say that with the GPT-5.5 Instant update, canvas is no longer available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding show up as writing blocks and code blocks in the reply. Paid users may still see canvas for a while on older models, until those models are retired.
If you cannot find the Canvas button, you are probably on a model that replaced it. Ask for a writing block, or switch to a legacy model if your plan still lists one. The writing guide covers the prompt either way.
Canva, the app
chatgpt.com/apps/canva is the Canva integration, a design app connected to ChatGPT. The spelling is one letter apart and the jobs differ. Canvas edits a document in ChatGPT. Canva is Canva's design surface, reached as an app. Installing Canva does not bring the old Canvas panel back.
Use Canva when you want a designed layout in Canva's editor. Use PowerPoint's add-in, ChatPPT, when the file has to stay a PowerPoint deck.

- Where did Canvas go?
- OpenAI's release notes say GPT-5.5 Instant and Thinking no longer include it. Look for writing blocks and code blocks in the answer instead.
- Is the Canva app the same thing?
- No. Canva is a third-party design app listed in ChatGPT. Canvas was OpenAI's own editing panel.
- Can I still open an old canvas?
- If the thread used canvas, open that thread. New models may not offer the same control. Copy the text out if you need to keep it.
